December Newsletter

Upcoming Dates
Dec. 18 Seasonal Party and half day. Dismissal is at 11:25. Lunch will be served.
Dec. 20-Jan. 4 Winter Holiday.

Speaking of Seasonal Party…
We have twenty-three students in our class, and gift giving amongst the students can get pretty hairy. This year I am asking that everyone in class brings twenty-seven small items to be put into gift bags for the students. The cost should run no more than $5.00. Items can include but are not restricted to: pencils, pens, erasers, small toys, candies, etc. Last year, I found some of the best buys at the Dollar Store, Big Lots, and Walgreen’s ten-cent sales. Please have your child bring in his or her items in by December 17, so that I have time to get the gift bags ready. I did this project with the students last year and it turned out very well.

Book Orders
Due to the short month, I will not be sending book order sheets home until January.

Book of the Month
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. With the movie coming out, there are various versions of the classic story for all readers. The novel makes for a good family read as well as an alternative for children who are not quite ready to read the Harry Potter Series.

November Updates

Important Dates
No book order due to book fair.
November 24-26 half days due to parent teacher conferences.
Dismissal at 11:25. Lunch is available
November 27-28 Thanksgiving Break.

Lifeskill Report
We have been working on the Lifeskill of Responsibility. We have been learning to take responsibility for our work, our personal things, and our actions. A Responsibility activity which can be done at home would be: Have your child make a checklist of what needs to done after school (i.e. homework, chores, activities). Post the checklist in an easily viewed area, so your child can see it and check it off as jobs are completed.

Reminders
Homework is due every Friday unless otherwise indicated. Reading Logs are due on Mondays at the latest and are part of homework. The only way your child will become a better reader is with practice.

Book Report
The Tale of Desperaux by Kate Di Camillo. This is the book we are currently reading aloud in class. We are hoping to have it finished before the movie comes out in December. It is a story of a mouse who wants to be a knight and protect Princess Pea. It is also the story of rat named Roscuro who wants the light of the castle instead of the dark dungeon. It is also the story of Miggery Sow who is a serving girl with a sad story and an impossible wish.

The Blanket Project

Our class made five tied fleece throws for Gabriel's Horn in the course of six weeks. It was a lot of hard work and a lot of fuzzy debris, but the people at the shelter were delighted to recieve these as Christmas presents. Give your child a pat on the back for the excellent job they did.
